September 11: STUYVESANT COMMEMORATION
08 september 2009
On September, 11, a Stuyvesant Commemoration will be organised from 4.00 until 5.30 pm in the church where he is buried, the St. Mark's-in-the-Bowery. A marker for the Stuyvesant glass window will be unveiled and the meaning of Stuyvesant as founder of present New York will be explained in speeches by drs. J.W. de Vries (member of the Provincial Executive Board of Friesland) and the Stuyvesant biographer dr. Jaap Jacobs.
dr. Jacobs will pay attention to the relation between what happened during Stuvesant's time and Nine Eleven. The vice-Queen's Commissioner of Friesland will plant a tree like Stuyvesant did 350 years ago. For the first time in history parts of poems of Stuyvesant are translated in English. They will be read loudly: a world scoop! This commemoration is organised by the province of Fryslân (Netherlands) and the St. Mark's church & the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames.
